These are the campsites in the Free State/North West Provinces that we've visited in the lhe last few years. Bloemhof is actually the only one in the North-West and is, in fact, only just across the border from the Free State. Information about the campsites is given in alphabetical order. Aldam Holiday Resort. November 2015. Location: 10km from the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg. Contact: www.aldamestate.co.za Cost: R230 for 4 adults for 1 night. Ablutions: Clean. Hot showers. Electric: Yes. Sites: 150 marked pitches. |

Other: This is a family resort so there are lots of facilities for kids. The dam is only a short walk away. |

Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve. December 2015 Location: 5 km east of Bloemhof. Contact: www.tourismnorthwest.co.za/bloemhof-dam-nature-reserve Cost: with electric: R150 per night for up to 6 people. Entry fee: R35. Fishing R20 pppd. Ablutions: Clean, hot water. Electric: Yes. Sites: The sites with electric have some shade. You may need a long lead. |

Other: When we were ther the dam was onlt 40% full so the electric sites were about 100m from the water. We drove around the reserve and saw zebra, wildebeest, oryx (gemsbok), springbok and plenty of birds. |

Bloemfontein. River of Joy Lodge. January 2019 Location: 25km NE of Bloemfontein just off the N1. Contact: www.sa-venues.com/visit/riverofjoy Cost:R270 for 1 night for 2 (pensioners). Cards accepted. Ablutions: Clean. Hot showers. Electric: Yes, but not everywhere. Sites. All sites on grass. The ones near the river don't have electric. |

Other: Next to a river. You can hire canoes from reception. Close to the N1 so noise from the road at night. Useful for an overnight stop. Self-catering accommodation is also available. |

Gariep Dam Nature Reserve. February 2016. Location: 10km from the N1 on the northern shores of Lake Gariep. Contact: www.gariepdam.co.za/gariepdam/NatureReserve Cost: with electric: R200 per night for up to 5 people. No electric: R100. Ablutions: Clean. Hot showers. Electric: Yes. Sites: 15 marked sites overlooking the dam. A few have some shade. |

Other: You can drive round the reserve and fish in the dam. We were the only people camping and picked the site withthe most shade. |

Golden Gate Highlands National Park. April 2016. Location: 70km SW of Harrismith. Contact: www.sanparks.org/parks/golden_gate Cost: with electric: R220 for 2 people for 1 night. No electric: R200. Ablutions: There are 3 well maintained, clean blocks. Hot water. There's a kitchen in each block with sinks and electric plates. Electric: Yes. Sites: Large sites, several have a rectangular concrete section and most have some shade. Some sites have built-in braais and there are also some moveable braais. |

Other: This is a SAN Parks site in beautiful countryside. Lots of walks available. There are a couple of one way (tar) roads through the park with various lookout points. You might see zebra, blesbok, wildebeast and springbok. There's a 'Vulture Restaurant' with an nice hide overlooking the feeding ground. We didn't see vultures but did see a jackal and a white-necked raven. There's a small shop near reception. |

Klerksdorp Dam Caravan Park. April 2018. Location: Just north of Klerksdorp. S26° 49' 02.5" E26° 37' 12.4" Contact: Cost: R200 for 2 people for 1 night Ablutions: In need of a bit of TLC. Hot water. Electric: Yes. Sites: Several sites next to the dam. Each site has a braai, tap, electric point and bin. Most have some shade. |

Other: This is a busy resort during holiday periods. There are indoor and outdoor pools, a pool slide, crazy golf and a bar/restaurant. There's a small shop on the site. |
