The camp and river at Stoney RIdge.

In 2009 we went back to Stoney Ridge to do the 3 day Advanced 4x4 Course.  As well as tackling harder obstacles we learnt a lot of different recovery techniques.

Altogether there were 8 vehicles and 9 drivers booked on the course (Kev and I both driving our truck). They were:

Barry (Jeep Wrangler) accompanied by his wife Valda.
Christo (Toyota Hilux) accompanied by his wife Zelda
Dave (Toyota Landcruiser) accompanied by his wife Margot and daughter Christine.
Hardus ((Ford Ranger) accompanied by his son Johan.
Hein (Mitsubishi Colt).
Mark (Landrover Defender).
Richard (Hyundui Terracan) accompanied by his wife Heather.

On the first day John went though a few points, we spent some time discussing various issues and then went out to have a look at all the vehicles, checking the engine, recovery positions, recovery gear and vehicle adaptations for life in the bush. We then drove out and started with a few fairly straighforward tasks.

Checking out the vehicles at the start of the course.

Driving down a steep track.

Navigating bumpy tracks.

Getting up the hill from the river was a lot more challenging and most of us needed some help, several different recovery methods were used.   Our Prado does not have diff lock and without it our wheels were spinning on the loose rock.

Fixing up the winch to pull our Prado up a steep, rocky incline

Getting to the top of the incline.

Another vehicle needing a tow.

Our final challenge was getting through a very muddy track.  Kevin went quite early and got through without much difficulty.  I was one of the last to go and had a real struggle.  John was amazingly patient and by getting me to go back and forth many times I eventually got out without needing a tow!

Still stuck in the mud!

Finally made it through!
