Zimbabwe 2010 - Lake Cunningham

This is a Zimbabwe Parks Recreational Park site (S20 22.084 E29 14.512) to the East of Bulawayo and is primarily a fishing lake. In fact it took us a while to convince the lady at the gate that we only wanted to camp and didn' t have any fishing rods hidden away! Once again the people at the camp made us very welcome.

On our way to the Park we were once again stopped at police roadblocks on several occassions. The police have always been very polite and usually just ask to see our driving licence / import permit / road tax documnet etc. Today one of them wanted to fine us $10 as he said that our front number plate wasn't good enough - I'd made one from cardboard before we left Matopos. However after Kev insisted on having a receipt and then chatted about the World Cup to him he let us carry on. We've found the World Cup to be a very useful talking point with officials at the border posts as well as at these police roadblocks!!

We stayed for 2 days and were the only people there so could pick our site right by the water.

The only facility was a long drop toilet but we could use as much water from the lake as we wanted and there was plenty of firewood which we were able to collect.

Sunset:

One morning we walked alongside the lake to the dam wall and then across the dam.

This chameleon was very well camouflagued.

Kevin inspecting the lock gates.

Although there was very little water going through the gates there seemed to be plenty in the river below the dam.
