Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. January 2012 - Cobham

Cobham is one of the more southerly sites in the Drakensberg. We stayed here 4 years ago - it was our first, very short, trip away with the Prado and our Oz tent - and remembered the stunning location in the foothills of the Drakensberg.

One of many dams in the area with the Drakensberg in the background.

There's a large camping area with shade in some parts but not many braai stands and just a few water taps. The ablutions were clean and there was hot water for showers. There's no electricity at the site.

Location: S29 42.238 E29 24.902

Cost: R120 per night.

This formation is called The Giant's Cup.

Eland in the early morning mist.

From the road between Cobham and Lotheni we had a good view of the Giant's Cup and the Sani Pass, which is the only road link between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho.

We did, of course, decide to drive up the Sani Pass in the bakkie (but we left the trailer at Cobham).

The road makes its way up the left hand side of the valley to start with and then becomes a series of zigzags to the top of the Pass.

I drove up the zigzags...

... and Kevin drove down them.

The Sani Top Hotel is at the top of the Pass with the Lesotho border post behind it.

There was a carpet of flowers on the top of the escarpment...

.and we had a great view back down the Pass.

we saw lots of these amur falcons sitting on roadside wires
