Botswana, February 2012 - Central Kalahari Game Reserve

We booked 6 days in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. We stayed at Sunday Pan for 3 nights and then had another 3 nights at Kori camp. Booking sites is complicated because you have to deal with 2 different companies (see campsites page) but worth the hassle as February is a lovely time to visit the area as it's so green. There are plenty of springbok and gemsbok around the Pans and the dry river valleys which means that you're likely to see predators.

Some groups of springbok numbered into the hundreds.

Many animals give birth during the rains as there's plenty of grass for the young. Gemsbok calves are a completely different colour to the adults.

We saw this pair of bat-eared foxed during the late afternoon on Sunday Pan.

There were plenty of birds about, many of them in their breeding plumage. We saw large groups of shaft-tailed whydahs, particularly near the waterholes.

Kevin spotted this python in a tree on the other side of the Sunday Pan waterhole. It was still there the following day.

Lilac-breasted roller on the lookout for insects.

We saw lots of kori bustards.

A few of the 34 giraffe that were together in Deception Valley.

One of a pair of lionesses that we saw in the early morning at Sunday Pan waterhole.

The following morning I watched a cheetah at the waterhole.

Sunset at our campsite at Sunday Pan.

This young jackal kept a close eye on us for some time. We didn't see any other jackals around with it.

We saw a pride of 7 lions in Passarge Valley. The 2 males and 1 of the females had collars on.

The afternoon before we left the Park there was a heavy thunderstorm on the far side of Deception Valley and the following morning the track to the Matsware Gate was muddy with lots of pools of water.

We were lucky enough to see this cheetah enjoying a drink from one of the pools of water.

A tree across the track which Kevin managed to drive around.
