Botswana, Namibia and Victoria Falls. 2008 - Kavango River, Caprivi Strip, Namibia

The Kavango river in Namibia becomes the Okavango in Botswana where it fans out to form the delta.

The Caprivi Strip is a narrow piece of land between Botswana and Angola which has only started to be developed since the Angolan conflict.

We stayed at Mahangu Safari Camp (S18 08.304 E21 40.841) and were able to camp right beside the Okavango River.

The following morning we were up before 6am to watch the sunrise from a high level platform overlooking the river.

This colourful looking bird is a long-tailed starling.

W we went for a drive around the nearby Mahango Game Reserve, just following the road near to the river where we saw plenty of buck grazing.  Often on one side of the road, by the river, it was green and lush with grass, reeds, trees etc and on the other completely dry with dried grasses and shrubs, although quite a lot of the trees still had leaves.  During the couple of hours we spent driving around we saw giraffe, zebra, crocodiles (some quite large ones basking in the sun), elephant, hippo, baboons, monkeys, buffalo, warthog, impala, hartebeest and some other buck.

A few of the hippo were grazing rather than just lolling about in the river.
