St Helena 2009 - St Helena's Day

Thursday May 21st was a public holiday on St Helena to celebrate the discovery of the island on May 21st 1502.

The weather was perfect as it remained dry all day but was not too hot.

There was a full day's programme of events in Jamestown so we spent the day in town.

The day started with a parade down the main street led by the island band and was followed by a service in the Mule Yard, beside the sea front.

There were stalls, raffles and games throught out the day. For the more sporting islanders there was a mini-marathon and a 'ladder' race.

The pool games were great fun with 2 teams of 8 competing in a variety of races.

In the afternoon there was a parade of 7 floats which started at the top of the town by the hospital, and drove slowly down the main road to the sea front.

By this time it seemed as if most of the islanders were in town and there was a carnival atmosphere.

THroughtout the afternoon and evening there was live music in the Mule Yard.

We stayed in town until the sun set and then returned to Gumtrees for a bite to eat and to freshen up before heading back into town for the evening - and stayed until after midnight!
