Christmas 2009 - South Africa - Tsitsikamma National Park

This park in on the South Coast of South Africa where the mountains come right down to the Indian Ocean. There are a few protected sandy bays where you can swim but for the most part huge waves crash over the rocks

It's a great place for sunsets over the sea.

Nearby the Storms RIver empties into the sea and there's a suspension bridge across the mouth of the river.

We visited this park about 10 years ago and walked across the suspension bridge.

The old suspension bridge has been replaced and there are now a couple of other bridges.

There's a board walk from the Visitor's Centre to the bridges but even so there's plenty of steep steps, up and down, to negotiate.

Once we'd crossed the bridge we followed a path to a lookout point at the top of the hill and could see back to the Visitor's Centre which is on the promontory. The campsite is a kilometre further round the corner

Dassies (rock hyrax) were are common sight around the camp either scampering around on the rocks or enjoying the grass. The one on the left is a youngster..

There are several walks through the coastal forest, some of them are part of a long distance footpath called The Otter Trail - which takes 5 days and has to be booked months in advance.

The paths are often narrow and weave up and down amongst the trees.

We saw this female nyala on the track ahead of us and waited quietly as it approached us.
