Lowveld, Northern South Africa. January 2012 - Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre

This centre is close to Moholoholo Mountain View and we spent an afternoon there viewing the animals and birds.

Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre looks after some of South Africa’s abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife with a view of returning them to the wild if possible. It is also passionate about educating local people about the value of conserving wildlife.

This cheetah was hand reared and cannot be released into the wild so she is used to give people an opportunity to see and stroke a cheetah in the hope that this will help to reduce the number of animals that are poisoned or shot.

We all got to stroke the cheetah, a marvelous experience.

We were able to get some good views of some animals' paws - these are of a spotted hyena.

They have a successful breeding programme for serval and have released many of them into the wild.

There were also several injured birds in large aviaries. This is a Bataleur eagle.

The thick scales on its feet and legs are protection against snakes.

Wild dog.

Adult leopard.

This baby rhino was abandoned. It was about 4 weeks old when we saw it.

A honey badger.
